Whenever you are just starting a family, expenses will be at a sky high. Most of us live with our parents before we get married. And then we would part ways with them so that you can get your own place and start a family. The toughest part is now you will be responsible for most of the expenses such as rent, utilities, food, furnitures, etc. Unlike before you probably just contribute a set amount, which would be way lower than what you will be spending when you go on your own.

Below are the ways to cutback on the expenses:

Accept used furnitures from friends and families. When my wife and I went on our own, we have to furnish our place. Most of our furnitures such as the sofa, dinner table, home theater furniture , etc. are used. Or if you don’t mind, you can go to yard sale and see if you can find a bargain furnitures if you don’t have families and friends that are giving away furnitures.

Buy the appliances that provides value. At first, we were thinking of buying the cheapest appliances. However, we went for the appliances that provides the most value. Meaning, we bought brand name appliances such as TV, refrigerator, DVD player at wholesale stores such as Costco where we got then for cheap price. In addition, we were able to take advantage of the rebates that they offer. We also bought mattresses wholesale at one of my brother’s friend. It was a Cal King mattress for $250. The retail price for that is actually around $500.

Check if you qualify for low income programs. If you don’t make enough money or at a low income threshold, you might need to check with the utility companies if you qualify for low income programs. You can save as much as 80% on the monthly utility bills.

When renting, rent closer to work. With the high cost of gas and the long commute, renting a home close to where you work is the way to go. Not only that you are saving the environment, you are also helping yourself save money with the high cost of gas. In addition, you will be reducing the stress from driving that could give a big impact on your overall health.
